Exam Question

(a) By means of a schematic circuit diagram illustrate the peak rectifier. If the supply voltage is v(t) = Vra Sin wt, what is the voltage across the load resistor? (6) (b) A d.c. motor takes an armature current of 110 A at 480 V. The resistance of the armature circuit is 0.2Ω. The machine has six poles, and the armature is lap-connected with 864 conductors. The flux per pole is 0.05 Wb. Calculate: (10) (i) The speed; (ii) The gross torque developed by the armature

Reference Answer

### Part (a): Peak Rectifier
#### Concept
A peak rectifier, also known as a peak detector, is a circuit designed to produce a DC output voltage that is approximately equal to the peak amplitude of an AC input signal. It consists of a diode, which performs half-wave rectification, and a capacitor connected in parallel with the load resistor. The capacitor charges to the peak voltage of the input signal and then discharges very slowly through the load, thus maintaining the output voltage near the peak level.
