Exam Question

Compare and contrast the destructive testing done on engineering materials with non-destructive testing done on engineering components. Briefly describe one destructive test and two non-destructive tests to illustrate the answer.

Reference Answer

Destructive Test is carried out only on the specimen pieces, which are subject to damage during the process. It reveals the mechanical properties of the specimen under test.
These tests are the Tensile test, Creep test, hardness test and impact test.
Non-destructive Test is carried out on the components only but not on the test pieces. It is used to detect flaws or imperfections during manufacture or service.
The test does not indicate mechanical properties. It only indicates Cracks, Porosity, inclusions and Fatigue cracks in their size and position.
