Exam Question

Describe in detail each of the following processes and give an example where each is likely to occur in marine engineering: State how in each case the initiation of the process is prevented or minimized. (16)

(a) Corrosion fatigue.

(b) Stress corrosion.

(c) Creeping cracks.

(d) Casting cracks

Reference Answer

### (a) Corrosion Fatigue
#### Process Description
Corrosion fatigue is a material failure mechanism resulting from the synergistic action of a cyclic or fluctuating mechanical stress and a corrosive environment. The failure process is significantly more rapid and severe than the additive effects of either corrosion or fatigue acting alone. The mechanism proceeds as follows:
1. **Initiation:** The cyclic stress damages the protective passive layer on the material's surface, or the corrosive medium creates small pits or notches. These locations act as stress concentrators.
