Reference Answer

### (a) Hydraulic System for Deck Machinery
A typical hydraulic system for operating multiple pieces of deck machinery (e.g., winches, windlasses, cranes) is the central hydraulic power unit with a ring main system. This design provides high power density, reliability, and centralized control and maintenance.
**1. System Layout (Ring Main)**
The system consists of a central Hydraulic Power Unit (HPU) which supplies pressurized hydraulic oil to a common high-pressure 'ring main' pipe running along the deck. A parallel low-pressure return ring main runs alongside it, returning the oil to the HPU. Individual deck machinery units are teed-off from this ring main, each with its own local control block and isolating valves.
