Reference Answer

### Introduction to Hydrogen Damage
Hydrogen damage is a general term for the mechanical degradation of metals and alloys caused by the presence of, and interaction with, hydrogen. The primary agent is atomic hydrogen (H), which is extremely small and can readily diffuse through the metal's crystal lattice. In contrast, molecular hydrogen (H₂), being much larger, cannot diffuse and can become trapped, leading to various forms of damage. This phenomenon is a significant concern in high-pressure, high-temperature, and corrosive environments found in marine and industrial applications.
