Reference Answer

### Introduction
As part of its short-term measures to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions from shipping, the IMO adopted amendments to MARPOL Annex VI at the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) 76th session. These amendments introduced two key regulations for existing ships: the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII). These regulations entered into force on 1st November 2022, with the first surveys and requirements taking effect from 1st January 2023. EEXI is a one-time technical measure to improve the design efficiency of existing ships, while CII is an annual operational measure to drive continuous improvement in carbon intensity.
