### Introduction and Purpose of the Air Cooler
The component referred to as an 'air cooler' on a large two-stroke marine diesel engine is more accurately termed the **Charge Air Cooler**. Its primary function is to cool the compressed air delivered by the turbocharger before it enters the scavenge air manifold. Cooling the charge air is critical for three main reasons:
