(a) Location (5)

(b) Starting arrangement (5)

(c) The loads they can supply and duration (5)

(d) The care and tests required to ensure reliable operation. (5)

Reference Answer

### (a) Location
As per SOLAS Chapter II-1, Regulation 42/43, the emergency source of electrical power, its associated transforming equipment (if any), the transitional source of emergency power, the emergency switchboard, and the emergency lighting switchboard shall be located with strict adherence to the following principles to ensure maximum availability in the event of a main machinery space fire or flooding:
* **Above Uppermost Continuous Deck:** The generator and emergency switchboard must be situated above the uppermost continuous deck. This vertical separation is critical to ensure that flooding of the main machinery spaces does not submerge and disable the emergency power source.
* **Aft of Collision Bulkhead:** The installation must be located aft of the collision bulkhead. This provides protection against damage resulting from a frontal collision, preserving the integrity of the emergency power system.
