Describe following metal finishing processes and their objectives

(a) Honning (4)

(b) Lapping (4)

(c) Polishing (4)

(d) Buffing (4)

Reference Answer

### (a) Honing
**Process:**
Honing is a low-velocity, high-pressure abrasive machining process used to finish internal cylindrical surfaces, such as engine cylinder liners. The process utilizes a specialized tool called a "hone" or "honing head," which is fitted with abrasive stones (sticks) of a specific grit. The hone is inserted into the bore and simultaneously rotates and reciprocates (moves up and down). This combined motion generates a characteristic cross-hatched pattern on the workpiece surface. A low-viscosity honing oil is continuously supplied to cool the workpiece, lubricate the stones, and flush away the fine metal and abrasive particles (swarf).
