Reference Answer

### (a) Rudder Jumping Clearance
#### 1. Definition and Concept
Rudder Jumping Clearance is the vertical clearance provided between a stopper arrangement on the rudder blade and a corresponding stopper on the ship's stern frame or rudder horn. This clearance is designed to allow for a limited amount of upward movement of the rudder in heavy seas or during accidental grounding astern, without transmitting the shock load to the steering gear.
As cited in the reference material, pads are welded to the hull and rudder, and the clearance between these pads is the jumping clearance. Its primary function is to act as a mechanical stop.
