Reference Answer

### (a) Shear Force (SF)
**Definition:** Shear Force at any transverse section of a ship's hull is the algebraic sum of all vertical forces (weights and buoyancy) acting on either side of that section. It is the internal force that acts perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the ship's hull girder, tending to cause one part of the hull to slide vertically relative to the adjacent part.
**Mechanism in a Ship:**
* **Origin:** It arises from the non-uniform distribution of weight (lightship, cargo, fuel, etc.) and buoyancy along the ship's length.
