Exam Question

Explain the following terms and give examples of where each condition might occur:

(a) Stress Corrosion cracking (6)

(b) Creep cracking (5)

(c) Corrosion fatigue (5)

Reference Answer

### (a) Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC)
Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) is a insidious and often catastrophic mode of material failure resulting from the synergistic action of a susceptible material, a specific corrosive environment, and sustained tensile stress (static or residual). It typically leads to the sudden brittle fracture of normally ductile metals without significant prior plastic deformation.
* **Mechanism:**
* **Initiation:** SCC usually begins at a surface defect, scratch, or stress concentration point where the corrosive environment can locally attack the passive film protecting the metal. This creates small pits or crevice corrosion sites.
