Exam Question

Explain the meaning and purpose of EACH of the following terms:

(a) Bulbous bow (4)

(b) Sparring pipe (4)

(c) Hawse pipe (4)

(d) Cable stopper (4)

Reference Answer

**(a) Bulbous Bow**
* **Meaning:** A bulbous bow is a protruding, bulb-shaped structure located at the forefoot (lowest part of the bow) of a ship, below the waterline. It is an integral part of the hull form, designed to alter the way the water flows around the bow.
* **Purpose:** The primary purpose of a bulbous bow is to reduce the wave-making resistance of the ship, particularly at its design speed. This reduction in resistance leads directly to improved fuel efficiency and, consequently, increased operating speed for a given power output.
* **Mechanism of Action (Wave Cancellation):** As a ship moves through water, it generates a system of waves, primarily a large bow wave. This bow wave consumes a significant amount of energy, contributing to wave-making resistance. A bulbous bow works by generating its own small wave system, out of phase with the primary bow wave generated by the main hull. When these two wave systems interact, they destructively interfere, effectively canceling or significantly reducing the amplitude of the combined bow wave. This cancellation reduces the energy lost to wave formation.
