Reference Answer

### 1. Definition and Principle of Operation
An incinerator is a shipboard machinery plant item designed for the controlled, high-temperature combustion of solid and liquid wastes generated during normal ship operations. It functions as a primary waste management device to reduce the volume of accumulated waste and render it non-hazardous before disposal.
**Principle:** The principle is based on a two-stage combustion process to ensure complete destruction of waste materials and harmful components in the exhaust gas, in compliance with international regulations.
* **Primary Combustion Chamber:** Waste is loaded into this chamber and subjected to controlled combustion with a deficit of air (starved-air combustion) at temperatures between 550-850°C. This process, known as pyrolysis, breaks down the solid waste into combustible gases (volatiles) and a solid residue (ash).
