Exam Question

In engine rooms that are operated under UMS conditions describe with the aid of sketches how the following are manifested:

(a) The perforation of a high pressure fuel pipe. (7)

(b) The imminence or possibility of a scavenge fire. (7)

(c) Engine room bilges. (6)

Reference Answer

### (a) The Perforation of a High-Pressure Fuel Pipe (7 Marks)
In a UMS environment, the detection of a high-pressure (HP) fuel pipe leak is critical due to the immediate and severe fire hazard presented by atomized fuel oil impinging on hot surfaces (e.g., exhaust manifolds, turbochargers).
**Principle of Detection:**
The system is designed for containment and early detection. As per SOLAS regulations, all HP fuel lines must be jacketed or otherwise suitably encased. The leak is therefore contained within an outer sheath, and the detection system identifies the presence of this leaked fuel.
