Reference Answer

### (a) Monitoring of High-Pressure Fuel Pipe Performance
**1. Principle of Monitoring & Regulatory Requirement:**
In a UMS environment, the primary concern for high-pressure fuel pipes is the catastrophic failure or leakage of fuel, which can atomize and ignite on contact with hot surfaces, leading to a major fire. SOLAS Chapter II-2, Regulation 4 mandates that all external high-pressure fuel delivery lines between the high-pressure fuel pumps and fuel injectors shall be protected with a jacketed piping system capable of containing fuel from a high-pressure line failure. This is a critical safety system.
