### (a) Short Cycling in Refrigeration Systems
**Definition:**
'Short cycling' is a condition in a refrigeration or air-conditioning system where the compressor starts and stops with abnormally high frequency. Instead of completing a full, extended running cycle to bring the refrigerated space to the desired temperature, the compressor runs for a very short period, shuts down, and then restarts shortly after. This rapid, repeated cycling leads to increased energy consumption, excessive wear and tear on the compressor motor, contactors, and starting gear, and ultimately reduces the operational lifespan of the equipment.
