Reference Answer

### Part (a): Bulwark and Freeing Port
**(i) Bulwark (3 Marks)**
* **Definition & Purpose:** A bulwark is the vertical plating structure that forms an extension of the ship's side plating above the weather deck (usually the freeboard deck). Its primary purpose is the safety of personnel, acting as a solid guardrail to prevent crew members, passengers, or loose deck equipment from being washed overboard in heavy seas. It also serves to keep the deck drier by deflecting spray and small waves.
* **Construction:** Bulwarks are constructed from steel plates, typically of a lesser thickness than the main hull sheer strake. To provide rigidity and support, they are stiffened by vertical brackets known as bulwark stays or stanchions, which are welded to the deck plating at regular intervals. A strong horizontal member, called the main rail or top rail, is fitted along the upper edge to provide further strength and a smooth finish.
