### (a) Function of the Stern Frame (6 Marks)
The stern frame is the heavy, robust structural member at the extreme aft end of the ship, forming the termination of the main hull structure. Its primary functions are to provide support for the rudder and propeller, and to transmit the associated forces and stresses to the main hull girder.
**1. Support and Housing:**
* **Rudder Support:** It provides the foundation for the rudder assembly. It houses the gudgeons which accept the rudder pintles, or provides the mounting face for the rudder horn and carrier bearing, allowing the rudder to pivot and steer the vessel.
