Reference Answer

### Part (a): Inert Gas (IG) System
A simple sketch of the Inert Gas (IG) system shows the flow of flue gas from the boiler uptake, through the scrubber and demister, propelled by blowers, and then past safety devices like the deck water seal and non-return valve, before being distributed to the cargo tanks.
#### Basic Functional Requirements of the IG System
The primary function of an Inert Gas (IG) system, as mandated by SOLAS and the FSS Code, is to prevent explosions in the cargo tanks of tankers by rendering the tank atmosphere non-flammable. This is achieved by reducing the oxygen concentration in the tank to a level where combustion cannot be sustained.
