(b) Name the type of vibration and how they are classified. (4)

(c) Machineries on board operate with their own natural vibrations which generally indicates their health. Explain the term 'abnormal vibration' and the sources from where they originate. (8)

Reference Answer

### (a) Definitions of Vibration, Periodic and Oscillatory Motion
**1. Vibration:**
Vibration is defined as a mechanical phenomenon characterized by the repetitive to-and-fro or oscillatory motion of a body or a system about its position of equilibrium. It occurs when a system is displaced from its stable equilibrium position, causing potential energy (e.g., elastic strain energy) to be converted into kinetic energy and vice versa. This energy exchange continues, resulting in the vibratory motion. In an ideal system without energy loss, this motion, known as free or natural harmonic vibration, would continue indefinitely.
**2. Periodic Motion:**
