Exam Question

(a) Describe how fuel injector components deteriorate with time? (6)

(b) What are effects of deterioration of fuel injector components? (6)

(c) What are the signs of a bad injector? (4)

Reference Answer

The proper functioning of fuel injectors is critical for efficient combustion, optimal engine performance, and minimizing exhaust emissions in marine diesel engines. Over time, the demanding operating conditions lead to various forms of deterioration in their components.
**(a) Deterioration of Fuel Injector Components (6 Marks)**
Fuel injector components are subjected to extreme pressures, high temperatures, corrosive combustion byproducts, and abrasive forces. This leads to several forms of deterioration:
* **Nozzle Tip Erosion:** The high-velocity fuel jet exiting the nozzle holes, coupled with abrasive particles (catalytic fines, rust) present in the fuel, causes gradual erosion of the nozzle holes and the surrounding tip material. This widens the spray holes and can alter the spray angle and penetration.
