* **Cause:** Dissolved mineral salts, primarily Calcium ($$Ca^{2+}$$) and Magnesium ($$Mg^{2+}$$), constitute the 'hardness' of water. When heated, temporary hardness salts (bicarbonates) decompose to form insoluble carbonates which deposit on heating surfaces.
