Reference Answer

### (a) Description and Function of Anchor Gear Components
#### (i) Hawse Pipe
**Description:**
The hawse pipe is a heavy, thick-walled cylindrical or oval-shaped casting or fabrication made of cast steel, fitted to the bow of the ship on both the port and starboard sides. It passes through the forecastle deck, the ship's forward framing, and the bow plating. The inner surface is smooth to allow for the unimpeded passage of the anchor and chain cable. The pipe is angled downwards and outwards to ensure the anchor clears the ship's bulbous bow and hull when dropped or heaved.
