Reference Answer

### (a) Uses, Machinery, and Lubrication/Cooling of Packed Gland Seals
**Concept and Purpose:**
A packed gland seal, commonly known as a stuffing box, is a sealing mechanism used to control fluid leakage around a moving shaft (rotating or reciprocating) that passes through a stationary housing. It consists of a chamber (the stuffing box) filled with rings of semi-pliable packing material, which are compressed by a component called the gland follower. This compression forces the packing to expand radially against the shaft and the stuffing box wall, creating a seal.
