Lubricating oil in a large two-stroke crosshead engine is circulated by a pressure-fed system. The oil serves to lubricate moving parts, reduce friction, remove heat, and carry away wear particles. The oil is drawn from the main engine sump tank by positive displacement pumps (typically screw or gear type), passed through coolers and filters, and then delivered to a main distribution manifold or rail running along the engine bedplate.
