Exam Question

(a) Explain why air receivers should be drained frequently and its internal surfaces to be provided with protective coatings (6)

(b) Describe the procedure for internal inspection of air receivers and the possible defects that may be encountered. Suggest suitable repair methods for the defects. (6)

(c) Describe fault conditions associated with air receiver mountings and the remedies to rectify the same. (4)

Reference Answer

### (a) Reasons for Draining Air Receivers and Applying Protective Coatings (6 Marks)
**1. Frequent Draining of Air Receivers:**
Frequent draining is a critical operational and safety requirement for compressed air systems. The necessity arises from the fundamental principles of air compression and thermodynamics.
* **Source of Condensate:** Atmospheric air drawn into the compressor contains water vapor. During compression, the air temperature and pressure increase significantly. When this hot, moisture-saturated air enters the relatively cooler air receiver, its temperature drops, reducing its capacity to hold water vapor. This causes the vapor to condense into liquid water.
