(c) State, with reasons, why a single earth fault on an insulated neutral system should always be cleared as soon as possible (4)

Reference Answer

### (a) Principle of Operation of an Earth Leakage Detection System
An earth leakage detection system is designed to monitor the integrity of the electrical insulation of an unearthed (insulated neutral) power distribution system, as commonly found on ships. Its primary function is to provide an audible and visual alarm upon the occurrence of the first earth fault, without tripping any protective devices. The two common methods are the indicator lamp method and the instrument method.
**Principle using Indicator Lamps:**
1. **Construction:** Three lamps are connected in a star configuration. The common point of the star is connected to the ship's hull (earth). Each of the other ends of the lamps is connected to one of the three phases (L1, L2, L3) of the 3-phase supply.
