Exam Question

(a) Explain with the aid of diagram the operation of variable delivery steering gear hydraulic pump (8)

(b) In an electro-hydraulic steering system fitted with hydraulic telemotor, explain the following (8)

(i) Automatic replenishing of leaked oil in telemotor system

(ii) Automatic replenishing of leaked oil in the steering gear system

(iii) Absorption of excessive rudder shock

Reference Answer

### (a) Operation of a Variable Delivery Steering Gear Hydraulic Pump
This type of pump is typically a radial piston design, often referred to as a Hele-Shaw pump, driven by a constant-speed, non-reversing electric motor. Its primary function is to provide a variable rate of oil flow in a reversible direction to actuate the steering gear rams.
#### Principle of Operation
The pump's output (delivery rate and direction) is controlled by varying the eccentricity between the center of the rotating cylinder block (rotor) and the center of a non-rotating guide ring (stator or floating ring). The magnitude of the eccentricity determines the volume of oil delivered, while the direction of the eccentricity (left or right of center) determines the direction of flow.
