#### 1. Principle of Operation
The primary purpose of a shipboard Oil Water Separator (OWS) is to process oily bilge water, separating the oil from the water to an extent that the effluent water can be legally discharged overboard in compliance with MARPOL Annex I regulations. The current international standard for discharge within Special Areas and for all ships built after 2005 is a maximum oil content of 15 parts per million (ppm).
