Reference Answer

### (a) Sketch, Description, and Operation of a Domestic Refrigeration System
A ship's domestic refrigeration system operates on the vapour compression cycle. It is designed to maintain low temperatures in provision rooms (meats, fish, vegetables, dairy) for the preservation of foodstuffs. The refrigerant used, Freon 22 (R22 or CHClF2), is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC).
**Main Components:**
1. **Compressor:** This is the heart of the system, acting as a pump. It draws low-pressure, low-temperature refrigerant vapour from the evaporator and compresses it to a high-pressure, high-temperature superheated vapour.
