Reference Answer

### (a) International Load Line Mark
The International Load Line Mark, also known as the Plimsoll Mark, is a symbol painted on the sides of a ship's hull. Its purpose, governed by the International Convention on Load Lines, 1966, is to indicate the maximum depth to which the ship may be safely loaded. This ensures the vessel maintains adequate freeboard and reserve buoyancy for stability and safety at sea under various conditions.
The markings must be permanently punched or welded onto the hull and then painted in a contrasting colour (white or yellow on a dark background, or black on a light background) to remain visible even if the paint fades.
