### (a) Advantages of Corrugated Bulkheads (6 Marks)
Corrugated bulkheads are widely used in modern shipbuilding, particularly in tankers and bulk carriers, due to several significant structural and operational advantages over traditional plane bulkheads stiffened with welded profiles.
1. **Weight Reduction**: The corrugations provide the necessary stiffness and strength to the bulkhead plate, eliminating the need for separate vertical or horizontal stiffeners (e.g., bulb plates, angle bars). This results in a significant saving in steel weight, which can be translated into increased deadweight capacity or improved fuel efficiency.
2. **Reduced Fabrication Cost**: By eliminating stiffeners, the amount of welding required is substantially reduced. This leads to savings in labour costs, welding consumables, and the time required for fabrication and erection. The inspection and non-destructive testing (NDT) requirements are also simplified.
