Reference Answer

### (a) Effects of Adding Mass on Draught and Trim
Adding a mass to a freely floating vessel has primary effects on its draught (bodily sinkage) and its trim (longitudinal inclination). These effects are governed by Archimedes' principle and the principles of moments.
**1. Effect on Draught:**
* **Governing Principle:** According to Archimedes' principle, a floating body displaces a weight of fluid equal to its own weight. When a mass is added to the ship, the total weight (displacement) of the ship increases.
