(b) A ship of 7000 t displacement has a water plane area of 1500 m2. In passing from sea water into river water of 1005 kg/m2 there is an increase in draught of 10 cm.

Find the density of the sea water. (10)

Reference Answer

### (a) Effects of Adding Mass to Draught and Trim of a Ship (6 Marks)
Adding a mass to a ship affects its overall draught (bodily sinkage) and its trim (the difference between the forward and aft draughts). The magnitude and nature of these effects are determined by the weight of the mass added and its longitudinal position relative to the ship's Longitudinal Centre of Flotation (LCF).
**1. Effect on Draught (Mean Bodily Sinkage):**
- **Principle:** According to Archimedes' principle, a floating body displaces its own weight in the fluid it floats in. When a mass is added, the ship's total weight (displacement) increases.
