Under Regulation 14 of MARPOL Annex VI, the limits for sulphur content in fuel oil used on board ships are as follows:
1. **Global Sulphur Cap**: For ships operating outside designated Emission Control Areas (ECAs), the maximum sulphur content of fuel oil used on board is **0.50% m/m (mass by mass)**. This regulation came into effect on 1st January 2020.
2. **Emission Control Area (ECA) Sulphur Cap**: For ships operating inside an ECA established to limit SOx and particulate matter emissions, a more stringent limit applies. The maximum sulphur content of fuel oil used on board within these areas is **0.10% m/m (mass by mass)**.
