### (a) Freeboard and Reduced Freeboard for Oil Tankers (6 Marks)
#### Definition of Freeboard
Freeboard is the vertical distance measured from the waterline to the upper surface of the freeboard deck at the side of the ship, amidships. The freeboard deck is normally the uppermost complete deck exposed to weather and sea, which has permanent means of closing all openings in its weather parts.
* **Purpose:** Freeboard is a critical measure of a ship's **reserve buoyancy**. Reserve buoyancy is the volume of the enclosed and watertight part of the ship above the waterline. It provides a safety margin against flooding and ensures the vessel can withstand the effects of heavy seas without being swamped.
