Reference Answer

### (a) Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and Methods
**Definition:**
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), also known as Non-Destructive Examination (NDE), is a wide group of analysis techniques used in science and industry to evaluate the properties of a material, component, or system without causing damage. The primary purpose of NDT is to detect, characterize, and size internal and surface-breaking discontinuities (flaws) to ensure the component's integrity and fitness for service, thereby preventing accidents and improving reliability.
As cited, *"NDT are tests carried out without destroying the weld joints... These tests neither break nor alter the structure or appearance of the welded component."* This preservation of the test piece is the defining characteristic of NDT.
