Reference Answer

### (a) Definitions of Engine Power Terms
#### (i) Indicated Power (IP)
* **Definition**: Indicated Power is the theoretical total power developed within the engine cylinders by the combustion of fuel. It represents the rate of work done by the expanding gases on the pistons. It is termed 'indicated' because it is traditionally measured using an engine indicator, which records the pressure-volume relationship inside the cylinder.
* **Measurement**: It is calculated from an **Indicator Diagram**, which provides the Mean Indicated Pressure (MIP or p_m).
