The measurement of bearing clearances in a diesel engine is a critical diagnostic and preventative maintenance task. Its importance is based on fundamental principles of tribology and machine reliability:
1. **Formation of Hydrodynamic Lubrication Film:** The primary purpose of bearing clearance is to create a precisely dimensioned space for lubricating oil. During operation, the rotation of the crankshaft journal within this space generates a high-pressure, wedge-shaped oil film. This hydrodynamic film completely separates the metallic surfaces of the journal and the bearing, preventing direct contact, minimizing friction, and drastically reducing wear.
2. **Heat Dissipation:** The lubricating oil flowing through the clearance serves a dual purpose as a coolant.
