Exam Question

(a) What is the significance of oil water interface in fuel oil purifiers? (3)

(b) Explain the principle of 'desludging operation' (6)

(c) What is the purpose of 'operating water', 'sealing water' and 'replacement water? How is operating water supplied and at what pressure? (7)

Reference Answer

### (a) Significance of the Oil-Water Interface (3 Marks)
The oil-water interface is the cylindrical boundary layer formed between the separated oil and water within the rotating purifier bowl. Its position is the single most critical factor determining the efficiency of purification.
1. **Definition**: The interface is the point of equilibrium where the centrifugal force acting on the water is balanced by the centrifugal force acting on the oil. Its radial position is controlled by selecting the correct size of **gravity disc** (also known as a regulating ring or dam ring).
2. **Correct Position**: When the interface is correctly positioned (typically within the stack of conical discs), it ensures that a stable water seal is maintained. This forces the lighter, clean oil to move inwards towards the bowl center to be discharged from the oil outlet, while the heavier water and separated solids (sludge) are forced outwards to be either discharged continuously from the water outlet or accumulated at the bowl periphery for periodic desludging.
