#### (a) Indicated Power (IP)
Indicated Power is the theoretical power developed within the engine cylinders by the combustion of fuel. It is the total power generated by the expanding gases acting on the crowns of the pistons before any deductions are made for friction or the power required to drive engine-mounted auxiliaries.
* **Measurement**: It is calculated from an 'Indicator Diagram', which is a pressure-volume (P-V) plot recorded for each cylinder using an instrument called a mechanical or electronic indicator.
