Exam Question

State the conditions, which must be satisfied before an A.C. generator can be paralleled with live bus bars. (8)

(b) After an A.C. generator has been paralleled explain how the following are achieved for the incoming generator:

(i) Correct kW load sharing (4)

(ii) Correct load current when the generator has power factor different to the other generators. (4)

Reference Answer

### (a) Conditions for Paralleling an A.C. Generator
For an incoming A.C. generator (alternator) to be safely connected in parallel with live bus-bars, a process known as synchronizing, four critical conditions must be satisfied. Failure to meet these conditions can result in severe electrical and mechanical stresses, leading to equipment damage or a complete blackout.
**1. Equal Voltages:**
* **Condition:** The terminal voltage of the incoming generator must be equal to, or very slightly higher than, the voltage of the bus-bars. (As stated in the reference).
