Exam Question

The exhaust temperatures of an auxiliary diesel engine are found to be excessive and uneven at normal load, with dark exhaust at the funnel.

Describe EACH of the following:

(a) An investigation into the situation (5)

(b) The procedure to remedy the immediate problems (6)

(c) Any further action that might be necessary (5)

Reference Answer

### (a) Investigation into the Situation (5 Marks)
The combination of excessive, uneven exhaust temperatures and dark exhaust smoke points towards incomplete combustion, with specific cylinders being more affected than others. A systematic investigation is required, proceeding from the simplest checks to more detailed inspections.
**1. Initial Data Logging & Assessment:**
* Record all current operating parameters from the local and Engine Control Room (ECR) panels: Individual cylinder exhaust temperatures, engine load (kW), engine speed (RPM), turbocharger RPM, scavenge air pressure and temperature, fuel rack positions for all units, jacket cooling water temperature (LT Central Cooling Water), and lube oil pressure/temperature. This data forms the baseline for troubleshooting.
