With reference to a fuel oil purifier:

(a) What are the reasons that may cause the purifier to overflow? (6)

(b) What are the reasons for the water carry-over with the oil? (5)

(c) What are the probable reasons for vibration seen during purifier starting? (5)

Reference Answer

Fuel oil purifiers are critical components in maintaining fuel quality on board, ensuring efficient engine operation and preventing damage. Malfunctions can lead to significant operational issues. A detailed understanding of their operation and troubleshooting is essential for a Marine Engineer Officer.
### (a) Reasons that may cause the purifier to overflow:
Purifier overflow occurs when the outflow of separated liquid (either clean oil or dirty water/sludge) is obstructed or when the oil-water interface is severely compromised, leading to the product escaping through unintended channels, typically the top cover.
* **Insufficient or Lost Water Seal:** This is a primary cause. The water seal, formed by sealing water at the periphery of the bowl, maintains the oil-water interface and prevents oil from escaping via the water outlet. If the sealing water pressure is too low, the quantity is insufficient, or air is entrained in the sealing water, the seal can break. When the seal is lost, oil follows the path of least resistance through the water outlet, leading to oil discharge with water and eventually, if flow is further restricted or the oil level rises excessively, an overflow from the purifier cover.
