### (a) Materials Used and Types of Deterioration (6 Marks)
#### **Materials Used in E/R Sea Water Piping**
1. **90-10 Copper-Nickel (Cu-Ni):** This is the most prevalent material for modern seawater systems due to its excellent corrosion resistance and anti-fouling properties. It contains approximately 10% Nickel and small amounts of Iron and Manganese, which significantly enhance its resistance to erosion and impingement attack.
2. **Aluminium Brass:** Composed of Copper, Zinc, and approximately 2% Aluminium, with a small amount of Arsenic to inhibit dezincification. It was widely used before the prominence of Cu-Ni alloys. The aluminium helps form a self-healing, protective surface film.
