Exam Question

With reference to refrigeration system answer the following:

(a) Purpose of having condenser & evaporator. (6)

(b) Explain why the refrigerant temperature changes from one side of the expansion valve to other side. (5)

(c) With reference to thermostatic expansion valve, explain what is meant by term superheat setting. (5)

Reference Answer

### (a) Purpose of Condenser & Evaporator (6 Marks)
The condenser and evaporator are fundamental heat exchangers in the vapour-compression refrigeration cycle, responsible for the rejection and absorption of heat, respectively. Their coordinated function facilitates the phase change of the refrigerant, enabling the transfer of thermal energy from the refrigerated space to an external medium.
**1. Condenser:**
The primary purpose of the condenser is to desuperheat and condense the high-pressure, high-temperature refrigerant vapour discharged from the compressor into a high-pressure, sub-cooled liquid. This process rejects the heat absorbed in the evaporator plus the heat of compression to a cooling medium (typically seawater on ships).
