(a) The mechanism of combustion, stating the factors which are important for good combustion (6)

(b) Oil fuel treatments (5)

(c) Soot removal equipment (5)

Reference Answer

### (a) The Mechanism of Combustion and Factors for Good Combustion
#### Mechanism of Combustion
Combustion in a boiler furnace is a rapid, high-temperature exothermic chemical reaction between a fuel (hydrocarbons) and an oxidant (oxygen from the air) to produce thermal energy. The process for liquid fuel oil occurs in several sequential and overlapping stages:
1. **Atomization**: The fuel oil, delivered at the correct viscosity and pressure, is forced through a burner's atomizer. This breaks the liquid fuel into a fine spray of millions of microscopic droplets, vastly increasing the surface area available for heating and reaction.
