### (a) Vertical Height of Centrifuge Shaft: Measurement and Criticality (6 Marks)
#### Measurement Procedure
The vertical height, also known as the spindle height or bowl height, is a critical dimension that ensures the correct clearance between the rotating bowl assembly and the stationary components of the centrifuge. It is measured and adjusted during major overhauls or if operational issues suggest a problem.
1. **Preparation**: The measurement is performed after the bowl, complete with the disc stack, is correctly assembled and fitted onto the vertical spindle. The spindle, with its bearings and worm wheel, is installed in the centrifuge frame.
