Reference Answer

### (a) Reasons for Frequent Draining of Starting Air Receivers (6 Marks)
Starting air receivers must be drained frequently to remove the accumulation of water and oil. This accumulation occurs due to the fundamental principles of air compression and poses significant risks to machinery and personnel.
**1. Source of Contaminants:**
* **Water Condensation:** Atmospheric air drawn into the compressor contains water vapor. During compression, the air's temperature and pressure increase, raising its dew point. As this hot, saturated air passes through the aftercooler and subsequently cools within the air receiver, its temperature drops below the dew point, causing the water vapor to condense into liquid water.
